    資料紹介

December's 9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami killed at least 156,000 people along the Indian Ocean-- 104,000 in Indonesia, over 30,000 in Sri Lanka, 15,000 in India and more than 5,000 in Thailand. Deaths were also reported in the Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh and several east African nations. It was the most widespread natural disaster in living memory. The global response to the disaster has been unprecedented -- governments and agencies have pledged more than $5 billion in aid and companies and individuals have promised $1.5 billion. Rich countries said on Friday they would suspend tsunami-hit nations' debt repayments to help free resources for rebuilding. (Reuters 2005, Jan 9)
Everyday, we can see a lot of funds on raising money for tsunami victims on the T.V, newspaper and Internet. Many funds are founded by non-governmental organization (NGO). This paper will begin by discussing what NGO is. Next it will provide the changing roll of NGO. Finally it will suggest what NGOs should be in future as conclusion.
    What is NGO?
According to Britannica Online, NGO is the organization that is not part of any government. A key distinction is between not-for-profit groups and for-profit corporations; the vast majority of NGOs are not-for-profit. In some countries, particularly socialist ones, some NGOs are government-organized. The purposes of NGOs cover the entire range of human interests and may be domestic or international in scope. Many NGOs are key sources of information for governments on issues such as human rights abuses and environmental degradation.
