What surprised me about Queen Elizabeth I after watching the movie, was that Elizabeth I had great power as a leader of her country even though she was a female. Even in today’s society, women’s status is not always equal to men’s status, I imagine that women’s status was much lower in the past. It of course can be different in the other parts of the world and in other traditions.
The initial reason that Elizabeth became a queen was that Henry VIII did not have male heirs; it was not because she was thought to be a great leader. The only male child of his was Edward VI, but he did not live long. It is obvious that people wanted men to rule the country from Henry’s hope having male children. Choosing a woman for a leader was the last choice the Parliament had left. Morrill (1996) stated many contemporaries found the prospect of female rule terrifying (p.234). In the movie, congressmen talk badly about her. They question her ability to rule the country right after she is given the throne since she is young and female.
Elizabeth’s reign was very successful; she overcame the problem of religious conflicts and made people have a national identity of England. However, from the moment she was given a throne, she had to overcome the conflicts which were fought behind the scenes. Hulse (2003) indicated that many people opposed on principle the idea of women rulers (p. 39).
