The two-party political system had established after the revolution. One was Federalist Party, led by Secretary of Treasury Hamilton. The other one was Democratic-Republican Party, led by Secretary of State Jefferson. There were many differences in how they made the nation go the way.
Looking at the idea how the party should lead people, there were many differences between Federalist and Democratic-Republican. Federalist Party believed that the government should be ruled by the “best people” who were rich and educated. Advocates were mostly the rich and entrepreneurs, and lived on the coast. Therefore, the fear for the Federalists was the extension of democracy. If democracy spread, people from the lower class would be involved in politics. Democratic-Republican Party believed that the government should be ruled by the informed masses. Advocates were mostly people of the lower and middle class who believed farming was the best. Although it was mostly supported by poorly educated middle or lower class people, Jefferson viewed “government for the people, but not by all the people,” who were white men literate enough.
